What the day actually does
You are collected in Bayeux and the minibus runs west. Omaha comes first or second depending on the guide, and the point of standing there is the bluff behind you rather than the sand in front. From there it is a short run to Pointe du Hoc, where the ground is still cratered and you can walk into the casemates and out to the observation post on the cliff edge.
Mont-Saint-Michel is not on this itinerary and nor should it be, at 130 kilometres away. The Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is the stop that changes the mood of the day, and it gets an hour. After that the road runs further west to Utah Beach and its museum, then inland to Sainte-Mère-Église, where a parachute still hangs from the church tower. You are back in Bayeux in the early evening.

Two reasons, and neither is the price. The first is coverage: most days on this coast stop at three sites and turn round, and this one carries you the full width of the American sector. The second is the cap. Eight people in a minibus means the guide is talking to you rather than at a group, and it means the running order can bend when somebody wants longer somewhere.
What you give up for that is a long day. Nine hours is nine hours, roughly three and a half of them moving between stops. If that is more than you want, the afternoon half day covers the three eastern sites in five.

Who this suits, and who should book something else
This one is for you if: you want the American sector properly rather than a sample of it, you are happy with a nine-hour day, and you would rather be one of eight than one of forty. It is also the easiest choice if you have no car, because the pickup in Bayeux is inside the fare.
Book something else if: you only have an afternoon, or a nine-hour minibus is more than the party can take. The half-day afternoon trip covers Omaha, Pointe du Hoc and the cemetery in five hours, and it is the right call with young children.

Where you are collected
Bayeux. Normandy guided tours list every departure with its own pickup point, and getting there has the trains and the drive if you are coming to Bayeux for the day.
Know before you go
- Lunch is not included. A break is made somewhere you can buy something. Bring it if you are fussy about timing.
- The cemetery closes at five. Last admission is half past four, which is part of why the day runs the way it does.
- It is windier than you think. Every stop is open to the Channel. A windproof layer matters more here than a warm one.
- Not wheelchair accessible. This one is not, though it takes a stroller and infant seats are available on request.
- Children from five. The minimum age is five and the cap includes them, so a family of four takes half the vehicle.

Our guide explained what the plan for the sixth had been and then what actually happened, which are two different things. She gave us solemn, unhurried time at the American Cemetery. There was plenty of room in the day for the German positions and for both beaches.
