What the day actually does
You meet at the Place du Québec in Bayeux. The minibus runs south-west for an hour and three quarters. From the mainland car park you cross on the shuttle. Then the guide takes you up through the walled village to the abbey. It is several hundred steps and there is no way round them.
Inside you get about two hours. That covers the church, the refectory and the cloister at the top — a double colonnade of slim columns, open to the bay. After that the island is yours until the pickup. Long enough for the ramparts and a proper lunch.
Why the abbey ticket matters here
Mont-Saint-Michel is not an expensive place to visit. Admission is €16 in summer and €13 from October, and the island itself is free. What the included ticket buys is not money. It is the queue.
In July and August that queue runs down the Grande Rue. It eats an hour of a day you have already spent three and a half hours travelling to reach. On a trip with a fixed return time, that hour does not come back, and it comes out of the abbey rather than the drive.

Who this suits, and who should book something else
This one is for you if: you are based on the D-Day coast without a car, you want the abbey rather than a photograph of it from the causeway, and stairs are no trouble. It suits anyone curious about how the thing was built: the guiding on this one goes into the construction, not just the dates.
Book something else if: you cannot manage hundreds of steps, or you are travelling with a pushchair. The island and the ramparts are worth a visit on their own, and the shorter ways to see Mont-Saint-Michel include a two-hour guided walk that leaves the abbey to your own pace.

Bayeux. Normandy tours and tickets list every departure with its own pickup point, and getting there has the trains and the drive if you are coming to Bayeux for the day.
Know before you go
- Hundreds of steps, and no lift. Every account of this day mentions them. There is no way round them, and the view at the top is the payment.
- It is colder out there. The bay is exposed and travellers in April and May consistently say they underdressed.
- Lunch is not included. The Grande Rue is full of it, and the salt-marsh lamb is the thing to order.
- Made for anyone steady on their feet. Moderate fitness is what the climb asks for, and a bad back will find the steps hard going.
- Children from five. The minimum age is five. The village works better than the abbey for young children.
