Our guide explained what the plan for the sixth had been and then what actually happened, which are two different things. She gave us solemn, unhurried time at the American Cemetery. There was plenty of room in the day for the German positions and for both beaches.

I came back without the words for it. The cemetery, Omaha, Utah, Sainte-Mère-Église and a site at Pointe du Hoc that is still being worked on. That much history in one day leaves you quiet.

It is colder and windier out there than you will expect, so dress warmly. The views are worth the wind and the history holds up. Julie was a delight to spend the day with.

We had an eighty-two-year-old and a ten-year-old with us and the sidecars worked for both. It is a genuinely fun way to see the coast and it is still a history tour.

Two hours for three of us around Arromanches and Longues-sur-Mer, with Phillipe and Remy driving. The guiding was detailed rather than decorative. It was also the most fun we had all week.

Standing on the actual beaches and at Pointe du Hoc was everything I hoped for, and Elisa was excellent. The problem was the train — we were booked on a later one from Paris than the guide expected and we lost part of the tour. Ask which train you are on.

Doru was excellent and talked the whole way out of Paris, so the drive became part of the tour. He showed us round the village as well as the garden. Go in the morning — the gardens filled up noticeably later on.

Dylan and Andrea collected us from the hotel on time. My husband is a serious reader on the subject and Dylan matched him. We did Pointe du Hoc, Omaha, Utah and Arromanches, and walked through some of the German bunkers.

Our guide carried a book of photographs and charts, which turned the drives into part of the tour. With lunch it ran about seven hours. The walking is manageable even for us older ones, though it covers Omaha to Utah and back.

What comes up again and again
Four things recur. The first is the guide, by name: Erik, Kate, Pauline, Emily, Olli, Doru, Audrey and Dylan all appear across multiple reviews, and in almost every positive one the guide is the reason the day worked. The second is time at the American cemetery — reviewers repeatedly praise guides who let them stand there unhurried rather than moving the group on.
The third is the cold. Travellers in April and May keep writing the same sentence about wind off the Channel and dressing more warmly than they expected. The fourth is the length of the day from Paris: nobody who took one regrets it, and everybody who took one mentions the hours.
Where the criticism lands
It clusters in two places, and both are fixable before you book. The first is the vehicle on the shared minibus days: one reviewer on the half-day trip describes a van whose air conditioning did not reach the back row and windows that had to be open, which made the guide hard to hear. The second is the train on the rail-inclusive day from Paris — one traveller was booked onto a later service than the guide expected and lost part of the tour.
The practical read on both: ask which train you are on when you book the Paris rail day, and if a nine-hour minibus is the risk, the half day from Bayeux covers the same three headline stops in five. The D-Day departures and the private days set out the hours involved before you commit to them, and getting there has the train times that caused that second problem.
