Your own vehicle, your own guide and a route you can change on the day. Everything else follows from that: the pickup comes to your door rather than a square, the running order bends towards whatever you want to spend longest at, and nobody else’s schedule shortens your hour at the cemetery.
What it is not is a better guide. The most-reviewed and highest-rated departures on this coast are shared minibuses, and the guiding on them is excellent. You are buying exclusivity and flexibility, not expertise.
$946 for up to eight travellers and $1,007 for up to seven. For a party of six or more that is less per person than a shared seat, which almost nobody expects from a page of four-figure prices.
Two private days state that their transport is wheelchair accessible. Nothing else on this coast does, and Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is difficult by any measure.
The commonest reason people book one. A shared day cannot detour to a particular headstone or spend an extra hour in the sector a relative landed on; a private one is built for it.
Travellers on the private days describe seven hours that included lunch, or a guide who timed everything so that nothing felt rushed. That is what you are actually paying for.

Book the per-group day from Caen
The crossover falls between five and six travellers. Below it a shared minibus wins on price; above it a private vehicle wins on both price and everything else. The prices guide takes the arithmetic further.
In the fare on all six: a private vehicle, a guide and all fees and taxes. Four include a hotel or door-to-door pickup, and two include an admission — the private Giverny day covers skip-the-line entry to Monet’s house, and the private abbey walk covers the €16 entrance.
Not in the fare on all six: lunch and gratuities. Museum fees sit outside the Bayeux day, and the sidecar excursion is weather-dependent by nature rather than by policy.
Price band: $171 to $1,007, and the basis matters more than the figure. Read whether it says per person or per group before you compare two.
Duration: two to twelve hours. The sidecar runs from two, the abbey walk three, the Bayeux and Caen days nine and five, and the Paris day twelve.
Group caps: six to fifteen. The per-group fares cap at seven and eight, which is where the arithmetic above comes from.
Refunds: all six refund in full at twenty-four hours’ notice.
If there are one or two of you, the arithmetic is against you. A shared full day from Bayeux at $165 a head does the same coast with a guide who is frequently rated higher — the D-Day departures lists them.
